Ok now seriously though, when I win it, just make sure it's signed, sealed, delivered.

I have been a PDA/Smartphone (Palm Pilot 1000) owner since the palm us robotics days and have been waiting for convergence until the Treo 650 delivered on the promise. Now I am patiently waiting on the next generation to put a deposit in the bank. Gawd knows I put alot of coin in Palm's coffers.

Based on the Treo 650, I was hoping they made these improvement for their next model:
    1. Reliable with much less bugs and louder earpiece.
    2. Reduce thickness, reduce weight.
    3. Add FM radio with 3.5mm headset plug on top.
    4. Internal antenna.
    5. Increase memory.
    6. Keep the SIM tray to allow SIM change without reboot.
Based on the 700p spec, only #5 above is realized. I am disappointed with this 700p and will most likely go for the SonyErricsion W950i as my next phone.

Can I ask why the external antenna is such a problem? I don't get it. Is this a style issue? It's small. I could understand the complaint if it were like the Motorola cell phones of the 80s with the huge antennas that were as big as the phone and could easily be broken off.

Man, without the antenna the Treo would
    1. fit in my pocket much better
    2. Allow me to pass off the Treo as a PDA, which would keep the flight attendents from harrassing me on a plane.
    3. Look so much cooler,

This was discussed in other threads, but the points I mentioned are important to me. The antenna makes it look like a phone, I've had my wireless off (radio off), and was reading an ebook at the hospital, when a nurse came over and made me turn it off. She didn't care that the radio was off, it looked like I was using a phone and she wasn't hearing any of it. Without an antenna, it's just another palm pilot (like the ones the doctors use)...

I sadly sold my Treo 650 so i could save on money for a new Treo coming to GSM (I can't sell the 650 when a new one comes out...no one would buy it)...yet i'll never know when that will occur. Till then I have a RAZR V3i....so thin...so..unlike my Treo 650...

Your Razr had a short life...bunches of problems with it, so Motorola has pulled it. Ben

I suppose that's a pretty good point. I've never been hassled by anyone about using my cell phone, so I hadn't thought of that. As far as fitting in your pocket and/or looking cooler, that's relative and subjective. I was speaking mainly of the particular useability of no antenna.

Just like someone said here on board somewhere, how the hell you will get your treo out of your pocket with no external antenna???
Technological superiority has never won a product battle. If that were the case we would all be flying in supersonic Concordes and using Apple computers.

The key to winning the battle is a combination of price, convenience, marketing, sound business model and a bit of luck.

What type of phone should I get to replace my Treo 650? I was thinking of the T-Mobile Sidekick II...but the fact that it has a crappy camera and ugly design and limited capabilities really kills it for me. Web browsing is defenitely a plus...so is messaging. I need something with a full QWERTY keyboard and so far that is what i'm interested in. Any ideas?

Ugh! No, don't go with a T-Mobile Sidekick. Unless of course you want security issues and the potentional for the theft of all information it contains. Some T-Mobile Reps will tell you point-blank about all the security issues the sidekick has. Also, the browsing capabilities (don't know if those were the capabilities you were talking about) are extremely limited. There are quite a lot of options. Maybe it'd be better if you explained why you want to replace your Treo 650, that way the phone options could be limited down for you. It really depends on what exactly you're looking for.

As far as the minimal upgrade assumption goes I will say once you start using EVDO, 1.2 B/T, 1.3 MP, 64mb it won't feel like a BS upgrade. The EVDO alone is going to blow you away and wait till you get to voice dial through a BT headset with generous range. A camera that you could actually use your printer's valuable ink to print with. Sprint TV is not to shabby over EVDO either.

If there is one let down anywhere it is the same form factor. Palm may think it's perfect but I think MOST people would like to see them lose the antenna and have a more slim design *cough Q cough *. The form factor is starting to be a little outdated. Slim is in.

But for the most part I think it's a fair upgrade for the $400-$500 price range, now if the put a $649 sticker price on it( That's $700 with tax where I live) then I might be a little disappointed.

    1) only the carrier-branded RAZRs were pulled, and only a small recent batch (compared to the millions that have been sold over the last year); unlocked RAZRs did not have the same problems

    2) the V3i is a new model (though the differences are subtle) and so far only available unlocked
