I been out for a bit and just caught this thread.

It is such an obvious hoax it's pathetic. Proof positive that one attention ***** can dupe the mindless masses.

I surprised it took gharrod to call a spade a spade - once again, on the money.

On a different note, KRamsauer, Wi-fi is a very reasonable expectatation, given that other pdas have it for a while (and, as other note, this is 2006). Thinner would be nicer too. I disagree on the form factor. I think it is great, but there is a lot of room to add things.

Still, EVDO and more memory will be enough for some.

But the bottom line is that it will still be Garnet 5.x, which is essentially the same OS they have been running for nearly 10 years.

So resets, hangs and all the other fun stuff that plague the Treo will still be there. Really a shame (and a testament to management incompetence) they couldn't get Cobalt going.

And yes, I will probably buy the 700P when it comes out :-)

While I won't put myself up as a "better known poster" though curious, personally, it's not worth my T&E. Knowing whether there is a target date of May 28 or April 24 does exactly what for me ? Both will be "target dates" subject to final testing, marketing plan completion, shipping, assembly line burps, etc. The fact remains I won't be able to buy one till they put it on the shelves.

It's kinda like asking the doc for a baby's due date.....I know it's around 38 weeks from whoopie night so whether the doc says it's may 14 or may 28 isn't gonna change anything. I know da wife is gonna pop the water bag 20 minutes after I go to sleep on whatever night before I have something important lined up business wise the next day. What the doc says might be right, but it's no assurance that I gonna be able to sleep thru all other nights except the one he picks.

What he said. While I am also anxiously awaiting the release, I would like more some concrete specs from Palm. Target dates, when they are this far out, may or may not ever materialize.

I am disappointed in Palm's inability to integrate wifi and blaming it on the carrier's, if this is indeed true (I'm not trying to open another debate, this is just my opinion.)

If you want a treo with WiFi then buy the 700w. Palm's card works as well as some 3rd party cards. One reason Palm may not do this is because the development effort is too much. This is why Palm will gradually move towards Windows Mobile on all its devices.

Cobalt wasn't this version of Palm's fault. PalmSource messed that up. I don't think you'll ever see a product from Palm, Inc that uses ALP/Linuxpalmos.

I've made these and other points in my blog.

Palm, PalmSources - it's all the same to me. Create an OS and over the course of 2 years, never have it implemented on a device.

That was one of the worst embarassment in the short history of PDAs.

I don't think development has anything to do with it...the Dungstens and DeathDrive have it. It's plain laziness and incompetence.

It may be a fake but how do we explain both this sheet and the Sprint Connection Manager listing the 700p coming out at the same time? That's one hell of a coincidence.

Your comment is based on how much experience designing smartphones? I'll grant that Palm has made some errors over the years, but if it's easy to come out with a better device, why aren't we seeing them? You only have to look at the cover of the latest Business Week to learn that "speed to market is the ultimate competitive weapon."

Moto Q? Sony Ericsson P990? Nokia 6682? All hot new phones that will blow away the Treo, all announced last year, all from companies a lot bigger than Palm, and they're all available -- real soon now, maybe.

Last year Blackberry led the PDA market with 21.4% market share; Palm was second with 18.6%. A bunch of other players had the other 60%. It's a very competitive market, and a lot of folks with brains and deep pockets are going after it. Palm knows this, and knows that they'll be out of business if they don't maintain a competitive edge.

But putting together a package that provides the right mix of cost and functionality in the context of what the market wants and what current technology lets you do is tougher than rocket science -- which is why you see so much crap and vaporware out there.

I was amazed at all the stuff my T600 could do in late 2003 , and it's still serving me well. I don't expect that a 700p in May will be as amazing, but I think it'll still be the best smartphone you can buy. After that, who knows?

Interestingly enough I walked into a Srint sore today with the intent to ask to see what they knew about a new Treo. The only word they had is on the W version so far and that information was sketchy (nothing in writing). In fact when the reps saw I had a 6700 they immediately started quizing me about my experience with it. I was curious as to their interest and asked and was told it was the phone of choice of most of the staff there but no one had gotten it so far. I quizzed as to why thry didn't wat to get the new Treo with Palm OS on it and was told there was nothing they had heard about it. I pulled out the sheet I had printed out about the Treo and they laughed and told me that Sprint would not likely put a sheet like that together based upon quality and no disclaimer/confidentiality statements. Not that this proves or disproves anything but that was the experience I had today.

Why hoax 5/28? (That is really, the only new info here.) Why not lure me in hook line and sinker with 4/24?

All I am going to say at this point, is I am going to start saving $6.16 a day.

No! We are not talking about sub-$300 phones. I think that for a super premium $600 phone it is not too much to ask Palm to bring their products up to par. I'm talking about the SD card or built-in wifi.

    If I wanted a WM5 phone with 240x240 resolution, I would buy a 700w, but I don't.

But this is not the thread for this...

bigboy is right - $600 is a PREMIUM phone/pda, so Wi-Fi should be a given.

gharrod, give 'em hell. n4cer is an attention ***** that got caught by the short hairs.

opensecret, I don't need to be a phone designer to tell that Palm(Source) screwed the pooch bigtime when the launched Cobalt and NOT ONE device was released with it. Unbelievable.

Palm has a form factor edge with the Treo, but for how long? Excluding screen resolution, the Treo 650 (or 700P) is very lacking in feature-sets seen in other devices. The OS is held together with duct-tape and is at end-of-life. Again, if it was a low-end device, I might shrug it off, but it is on the premium side.

I love the Treo, but they are stagnating and going to have their lunch handed to them when (not if) the big boys finally figure it out.

I also walked into a big Sprint store just a couple hours ago. I asked the manager, "I heard there is a new Palm based Sprint Treo coming out, do you know if and when it is?" His comment was "yeah, we got a memo the other day about it, it said in May, but I think its June or July myself. Its like the Verizon 700, but its the palm Operating system." Thats all he knew. It was the northwest side Sprint store here in Indy.

Guess this means we can all argue and speculate for a few months, or just sit back and wait. I played with the 6700 while I was there. Too complicated, fonts too small for me, and I don't really like its little joy stick. Perhaps if I got used to it, it would be different, but thats my two bits.

Sprint is starting to leak like a sieve.

I walked into a Sprint store today with my horns on and they threw me out, I didn't even get to ask........................

Heh....anyone look closely at the button layout on the 700p? It's exactly like that of the picture I posted a while back, menu button and everything. So for all those skeptics who called me a liar, or slinky, HA HA!
  20. #320
OOOOH...btw, did you notice they expect the 700p to support On Demand? On Demand is a GPS capable application, there *might* be that possiblity if it's just like the one found on powervision phones.

Oh, and notice, pTunes is preinstalled.
