    • We are downgrading PALM from Overweight to Neutral, reflecting
our view that the stock is approaching appropriate value with a near-term
risk that consensus expectations for Palm's F4Q are too high.
    • We are making several assumptions: 1) RIMM’s tussle with NTP did
not lead to major defections to PALM, 2) PALM's expansion of the Treo
    line-up takes place in late CY06, and 3) PALM’s 2-for-1 split (scheduled
for 3/15) does not signal strong near-term upside, but reflects the board’s
view of appropriate liquidity for a stock of this market cap.
    • F4Q expectations may be too aggressive – carriers may hold off on
Treo orders, reducing channel inventory ahead of the C2H product
intros. We are slightly above F3Q consensus (JPM: $0.33 EPS /
$375.3mm sales; Consensus: $0.32 EPS / $373.0mm sales), but are well
below F4Q consensus with an EPS forecast of $0.31 on $383.1mm sales,
assuming 600K Treo units will ship in F4Q, up from 590K this quarter.
    • We believe Palm's longer-term prospects are strong. The launch of
'mass-market' and 'international' Treos in late CY06 should significantly
expand PALM’s addressable market, leading to higher volumes and
economies of scale. Microsoft’s SP2/Windows Mobile 5.0 initiative
should enhance the attractiveness of the Treo for corporate users in 2007.
So longer-term investors should maintain positions, in our view.
    • Neutral Rating with a short-term perspective. PALM is trading at 21.9
times fully-taxed FY07 EPS – a 6% premium to the mean of ourcoverage – and an ex-Cash ($3.90 net cash/sh adjusted for split) multiple
    of just 19.2 times fully-taxed PF FY07 EPS of $0.90. Ex-Cash, we
believe PALM is somewhat undervalued, however near-term outperformance
could be constrained owing to the risk of a downward
    revision to F4Q estimates.

Bear Stearns analysts Andrew Neff, Bill Hand and Ted Chung sent a note to clients regarding Palm’s launch with Sprint of the much-anticipated Treo 700w. Key excerpt:

Sprint to offer PALM Treo 700w ahead of schedule, as early as end of February. Based on our channel checks, it appears that Sprint is likely to offer the latest PALM Treo 700w (Windows version) as early as end of February, which would be ahead of schedule (following its launch with Verizon on 1/5) — Sprint version of Treo 700 was not expected until end of March at the earliest based on the historical length of the exclusivity agreements with carriers (i.e., 3-6 months). Sprint is likely to price Treo 700w at $449, at parity with Verizon and a $50 premium to Treo 650. Sprint will offer both models. Stock impact: positive for PALM.

Well, I think this is an older report. From the Merlyn beta to Shadowmite's comments on what is being tested on the Sprint network to Verizon's 6 month exclusive on the W and the reports coming out of Sprint stores now, that they are getting the P -- I think we can be fairly certain that Sprint's first release will be the 700P(erry)* and not the W.

    Cheers, Perry.

Hey guys, good news! The rumors are true. I saw a line wrapped around the local Verizon store of people waiting for the store to open so they could get one. I took a picture of the people in line as proof.

Never have I seen a sprint rep, either in a store or on the phone in some far away call center, who knew anything about a new Treo - (Specs, OS, or RELEASE DATE) before I had seen it long before they had on this message board. Sprint reps are just robots - they get their information from us when we go in to ask them for information. They don't have a clue so please stop using them as a reference for any rumor... I am just tired of it! Stop Please!

I made a sacrifice to the Palm gods so that the significantly enhanced Treo 700p will be released on this Friday!

I have been a PDA/Smartphone (Palm Pilot 1000) owner since the palm us robotics days and have been waiting for convergence until the Treo 650 delivered on the promise. Now I am patiently waiting on the next generation to put a deposit in the bank. Gawd knows I put alot of coin in Palm's coffers.
