what do you think? I think the phones to watch out for in the near future are the 700P, 700W (gsm) and of course the 700w for sprint.

700P could also be the hollywood... could be 700G.

Would not be surprised about palm NOT coming out with an antenna-less version.

The 650 was suppose to have WiFi option and a better camera...

I'm still with the 4 2006 Treos being:

    700W
    700P
    Hollywood (no antenna)
    Lowrider (budget)

    theory.

And for the volume of chatter coming out from Sprint store posts and listings seen in their computer's -- I think the 700P is next for Sprint followed by the 700W. April would be great, May is okay and most probable, but either "J" word just makes me shiver when mentioned.

Talk to me at year end -- and I will give you firm dates and specs on all four!!

    Cheers, Perry.

I would guess a 700w next for sprint. blazer is too slow to take advantage of EV-DO.

What was the phone that Merlyn had exactly? How much did he pay for it? Where did he buy it?

I guess maybe I should do a search...

Shadowmite confirmed it was the same as the 700P he had seen, running Garnet 5.4.9 with EV-DO.

I'm not sure I saw a price, supposedly off Craiglist, had it until Palm showed up. . . . .

Lowrider could also be a more "PDA" type phone, like the Q or the old Tungsten W.

Could be inexpensive if it does not have built-in camera, no speaker and mic (BT), and uses a non-replaceable battery.

A GSM version would be cool... I liked my old Tungsten W.

I am a bit confused as to how Palm would have tracked Merlyn down in the first place? Seems they would have had to go through a lot of very unusual channels to do so and I am wondering how they did this without a court order. Unless of course it was stolen goods. Is that the case?

There were about 100 web sites pointing to treo central 's pics of the 700p.....you think an event like that could possible have skipped Palm's attention. You register at a site, you give out personal information. With TC and all joints like this using Palm's trademarks "with permission", I certainly wouldn't want them to risk that benefit by not telling them how to contact me.

Then again, my on line usage predates this "handle" business anyway. I can remember when regular forum users would refuse to answer a post with a "handle". There were certainly a lot less flame wars back then , that's for sure

Didn't Merlyn sell it back? it being EV-DO, probably would have been hard to activate...

I am sure Palm/Sprint tracked it down through Sprint. Merlyn said he didn't get compensated...he is cool.

Heh...I find it interesting how you think blazer is too slow for EVDO. If you checked the big thread I'd started a little while ago, you'd know the version of blazer has been updated with several new features, including a quick switch to disable CSS and extensive formatting to display the page quicker. You haven't even used it and are already passing judgement. Personally, I think the 700p is next for sprint, we haven't seen a single inkling about a sprint 700w yet. All leaks have been the 700p.

Just to be clear, I had EVDO working, got to use it a little bit, it was pretty awesome, and I will definately be one of the first to get this phone when it's released. There were quite a bit of UI tweaks too (typical of palm) to make things easier, add things that 3rd party apps used to add.

I dunno how palm got a hold of me, but the person I spoke with was very nice about it, so I thought it'd be on the best interests for both palm and I to cooperate.

The 700W is ready for sale... FCC approved and all!

I personally would rather have a Palm unit with Blazer than a WM5 phone. I use EDGE, at it's ok (CDMA slower?), but it sucks that it is not multitasking. Maybe with the EV-DO speed, the page/screen refresh performance will be much better. I guess I dojust need to try it...

But I think Sprint has more to gain with a 700w... nothing to argue, it's just an opinion.

So you think I should not try to buy the hollywood on Craigslist?

I still thin Merlyn has Palm connections....

My opinion of course. Also, as far as the EVDO blazer thing, I have my LifeDrive (sans EVDO of course) but with wifi Blazer cruises in the fast lane. Don't know how different EVDO would be as it has been said that POS doesn't necessarily know the difference in network connection as it is handled through a separate radio...

I think Merlyn IS the connection.

I will get whatever Treo Palm GSM phone that comes out if it is better that the 650... a better camera is good enough reason to get me to upgrade. I guess I am too easy.

So, Blazer with more memory, or better yet with W-CDMA should be awesome.

You know, I'd like to see a standard set between GSM and CDMA. Perhaps it is wishful thinking, but it sure would make it easier on a lot of parts. Not to mention barrier to entry would be greatly reduced for the ODMs. Talk about spurring competition. The only thing they would have to cater to is the carriers, not the inter-operability of the device and the radios. Just a thought.

Greetings. I know I'm a newbie here, but I'm pretty sure that January + 6 months = July, not June. So if a May/June release is actually going to happen, it couldn't be a 700w unless they violated Verizon's 6-month exclusive period.

Me, I'm just hoping that my existing PalmOS phone (Samsung SPH I300) holds out until the 700p is available. I know it won't be that much of an upgrade for you 650 owners, but my current device is so old that it runs on coal instead of batteries . Going to a 700p will be a big step up for me!

I was told that the phone had been misplaced by an authorized user and Sprint activation led Palm to the phone. Supposedly the person who misplaced the phone did not report it as misplaced until it was offered for sale on a website.

Has it ever been stated that the exclusive was 6 months by verizon or palm?

Yes, it was originally stated in the joint webcast (Verizon, M$oft & Palm) as a six month exclusive. We're quibbling about June vs. July however; even if "announced" for June, nothing ever ships on time with Sprint, so in spirit they can release in July and avoid any contract dispute with Verizon.

    DISCLAIMER:
Again, this was only my personal thoughts from a fertile and over-active imagination (#61 above). I did not quote (nor seek validation) from a Verizon, Sprint, Palm or Santa Claus source. Just putting two and two together to come up with something other than 22: (a) the rumored slip to May/June (which necessarily means June/July in carrier speak); (b) the apparent ease of implementing EV-DO on WM5 vs. Frankengarnet; (c) the absolute silence from Palm on any specific release date, or for that matter, specifications; (d)the apparent feature set (including size, lack of antennae, GSM) for the Hollywood for the Euro crowd; (e) the "lowrider" identification string from Shadowmite's test unit; (f) Palm's earlier announced "feature phones" which would be lower end Palm powered devices; (g) Colligan's "Four Treo" statement (we already have 700w for Verizon; add a 700w for Sprint, plus lowrider, plus Hollywood = 4 releases in 2006). Put it all together, and you get abcdefg.

Remember, the "P" in PDA stands for personal.
If it works for you, it is "P"erfect.
