Can anyone please tell me if there's a secret to prevent the Treo's SMS messages from instantly popping up on the screen? Can they be automatically sent to a file until they are ready to be read?

In the messages app, go to menu, options, preferences and enable privacy mode. you will only get a pop up telling you you have a message...the message will not be displayed. Is that what you want?

    BTW, what's up with Sarge?

when I tap the messages icon, menu doesn't show up. Do I have to go to another location? I am now looking at the messages icon on the text messaging screen itself, is this the one that you're talking about?

    press your menu button.

it's the smaller one to the right of the d pad above the button with the cute picture of the envelope.

I truly think it may be a Verizon thing, because the options you guys are talking about does not exist on this fone. Is it a software upgrade or something? There's no SMS privacy mode.

Hmmm, maybe another verizon user can chime in...

What options do you have? Just want to be sure we are looking in the same place....

This is how it's done on an unlocked GSM phone...try this:
Launch the Preferences app, choose Sound & Alerts, Aplication=Messaging, Tones and uncheck "Show Message Alerts".
    V > Vx > m505 > m515 > T/T > T3 > TC > 650 > 680

The OP answered his own question. This option is not available on Verizon phones.

In that case, you will need a 3rd party app that can suppress the popup. Butler does this, as does Callfilter, IIRC. I'm sure there are others...
