I agree with rretsiem that easier synchronization would be much welcome. In a broader sense, is it possible for SqueezeControl to use the same menu options list as the SBC remote? The SBC lets you choose what appears on the home screen. The 3 options I use most (Rhapsody Playlists, Alarms, and Synchronize) are buried in submenus and I now reach for my SBC remote first because it let me add those to the top menu.

Using both the SBC remote and SqueezeControl gets disorienting.

And as for the iPeng swipe system... It's convenient but confusing as hell. My moderately tech-savvy roommate bought iPeng last year and EVERY TIME he tried to use it he would forget where to find the sync options, choose the wrong player, blast loud music into my room, and then come ask me how to use it. I never remembered which direction did what either so I'd swipe around until something interesting happened.

You can already add Rhapsody to the Home Menu using MySB. In fact I think you can add any SB 'App' using the same method.

This brings me to a reason why I hesitate to do Home Menu customization. The SB's do it using two different methods. One is to store the customization on the server as with the Apps. The other is to store it on the local device. Since the Squeezeplay interface (which is what the controller runs) is very much in flux, I want to wait and see what method(s) they finally settle on using.

If or when I do add sync options it would definitely not be accessed thru swiping. Swiping is already used for deleting in a few different places and skipping songs in the now playing. Sync options need a consistent way of accessing it. Most likely it'll be an App Menu option.

Any large changes to Squeeze Control won't be done until after webOS 2.0 is released. I'm probably going to re-architect the app to use the javascript services feature to handle the networking.

I just submitted a new app "Squeeze Control Player" to the BETA catalog.

It's a software Squeezebox player. It's meant to be a companion to Squeeze Control, so there are no playback controls. Use your Squeezebox Server's web interface or Squeeze Control on a second phone (the reason for this is below).

This is a very early build of this app and there are a lot of limitations.

    - Currently this only works with a local Squeezebox Server.
    - Only supports PCM (uncompressed) music streams. You server should automatically convert all other formats except mp3 and ogg.
    - Only supports playing music files. It won't play any internet streams; radio, Rhapsody, Pandora, etc.
    - Music will pause when the app is in the background, hence the need for controlling it from another device. This may actually be a limitation of the webOS PDK.
    - Cannot synchronize with other players.
    - May not be completely stable. While it's been pretty stable in my testing, I can't guarantee that you'll have to same experience.

It should be available for download within 24 hours.

    Here's the link to it:

Installed sqeeze player today, tried it out this evening. this is just what I've been looking for. Now if I could just get it to work. It connects to the server, and I can see it in squeeze control. I can browse my music , select something and start it playing. I just don't hear anything. I've got my Pre connected to a set of pc speakers. I hear system sounds, and I use this setup all the time to listen to pandora, slacker, dr podder, etc. It seems to be playing, when I touch the screen the progress bar comes up and the little ball moves along and the time increments, but no audio output. I'm using a sprint pre with the stock kernel and very little patching. If there is any other info about my setup you need, please let me know. I so want this to work.

    Thanks,
    Fran

An update, I tried controlling the player from my laptop through squeezebox server. Same result. I looks like it is working but no sound out. additional information: server messages + strm-t (it says this 3 times) Local Messages: SDLNet_TCO_Open:Couldn't connect to remote host (it says this twice)

    thanks,
    Fran

First let me reiterate that SC_player currently does NOT play any sort of internet stream, Pandora, Rhapsody, radio etc. It will only work with local music files and it cannot play mp3's or ogg's.

But actually I just realized that I hardcoded an ip address for the music stream, will change that and submit an update soon.

To be clear on my end, I was trying to stream flacs from my local server, not anything from Pandora, etc.

I'll install the update as soon as it becomes available.

    Thanks,
    Fran

Okay, it works. Controlling from my laptop, no problem. But using squeeze control, if I have squeeze control on top and squeeze player in the background, the stream stops. As you said it would. So I have to go to squeeze control, pick my music, start it playing, and then swipe over to squeeze player to listen. Maybe not the ideal situation, but it works! Of course I can always control it from my laptop.

Thanks for this app. As I said, it is just what I have been hoping for.

I've asked on the Palm developer forums about the music pausing in the background problem. The Palm developer relations guy wasn't even aware that apps would automatically do that and so far has yet to be able to offer a solution. It's looking like it may be a limitation/bug of the PDK. At least they know about it now and hopefully will get it fixed in webOS 2.0.

I guess that the PDK was really meant for games which would always pause everything in the background anyway.

Oh, just to let you know, when you're controlling the player with Squeeze Control on the same phone, don't try to seek thru the song; ie. manually move the position slider in Squeeze Control. It won't work right (you may need to restart the app). Seeking works fine when you're controlling from another device, but all the forced pausing and un-pausing when going in and out of the background causes trouble.

Just submitted a new version of Squeeze Control Player.

    Version 0.2.0

    New Features:
    - native decoding of FLAC and ogg streams.
    - support for greater than 16bit FLAC and PCM stream. (converts them to 16bit)

Conversion to 16 bit is currently done by simple truncation. It's not the best way of doing it, but it should be ok for the audio hardware of a phone.

This version should pretty much handle any format that a Squeezebox server can play expect for mp3. The server basically transcodes everything to FLAC @ 44.1khz. I've tested playing a 96/24 FLAC file and it works fine.

If you're wondering why mp3 support was the first thing added, its because mp3 decoding/playback is a licensing nightmare. I'll add support if and when I can do so legally without paying an outrageous licensing fee.

Just submitted a new version of Squeeze Control Player. Should be available in a couple of hours.

    Version 0.3.0

    New Features:
    - Transitions support, fade in, fade out, crossfade.
    - Fixed a bug where 0% volume = 100% volume

Just submitted a new version of Squeeze Control Player. Should be available in a couple of hours.

    Version 0.4.0

    New Features:
    - Synchronization support. Works decently well, but it will never be perfect since the Pre's hardware is not accurate enough.
    - Fixed some flac decoding issues.
    - You can now rename the player in Squeezebox server.

I noticed that you added the sleep shortcut to the new update. Preware is picking up the update but it just directs me to the app catalog, which still has the older version. I'm guessing the app catalog will update itself soon (not sure of the mechanics of how app submissions/updates work). Anyway, I'm looking forward to it. Thanks for taking my suggestion!

It takes a couple of hours for an app to show up in the catalog after it has been accepted for publication.

Squeeze Control 2.0 is coming along nicely, and I just want to share some screenshots. There's still a couple more things to do and lots of testing. Some things I want to add (like server discovery) are webOS 2.0 only and won't be accepted to the App Catalog yet, so this version won't get them if I release this before the end of the year. Anyway enjoy the screenshots.

    Nice...

New Squeezebox user here (Boom for my apartment) and just purchased Squeeze Control. Loving the support of this app.

I've just submitted Version 2.0 (actually 2.0.1, v2.0.0 had some webOS 2.0 code that I commented out, but the submission system still rejected it). It should hopefully be available for download in the next couple days. Here's the changes plus some more screenshots.

    - Complete redesign of the user interface. The addition of a 'Player Menu' allows quick access to additional controls of a player from any screen.
    - Support for different backgrounds including user selected images. Each player can have a different background.
    - Dashboard controls for when the main app is in the background.
    - Support for landscape mode.
    - New 'Manage Players' screen for controlling players synchronization and for quick access to basic controls of all your players at the same time.
    - Added mini status icons for Sleep, Repeat, and Shuffle status.

Squeeze Control v2.0.1 is now available in the App Catalog.

I discovered a bug after I submitted the 2.0.1 update, where if the app gets disconnected when the dashboard controls are showing, it would display an error when you try to reconnect and you have to restart the app to get it to connect again.

I've already submitted an update that fixes this, but in the mean time you can turn off using the dashboard controls in Preferences.
