You either had to have not installed all the required packages with the "aptitude install" command...

Or didn't edit the Makefile, and certainly did not run the "make unpack patch pack" command.

If you *did* run the make command and it did not create the build/ directory for you.... the only way that could happen (AFAIK), is if you didn't install all the required packages needed to build it.
