Unfortunately, this statement is 100% correct (thanks, center15 - I did not realise it was on O2 forums).
I went in to the nearest O2 store today (Strand, London, WC2) and asked the question.
They mentioned that they have different stocks, invoices, SKUs, basically completely different systems and as such a receipt from O2 Ireland would mean nothing for O2 UK. Same name, different company.
