The updates ARE available as download through the computer, in the form of the WebOS doctor. It would obviously wipe the phone each time, but it would update. I would imagine that the OTA update just requires data to be working or wifi.

The difficult part would be the remapping. It should be possible, but I wouldn't know the first thing about getting it done on the Pre.
