I think it all depends on what your needs are. Do you want the messages cleared off the server after accsess? Do you need/want to see the messages on multiple computers, phones or other devices? Is a backup copy of e-mail important to you?

I like IMAP (or EAS for Exchange/Outlook) as it allows for the most flexibility.
