Just to be clear, I tried putting a cert on my phone based off of the ones my laptop was using to connect and it didn't seem to make a difference at all, I didn't even get a different error. Can you send me the names of the certs you were using so I can try them, I will let you know how they work out...
I was under the impression that PEAP meant that nothing beyond basic certs was required but maybe each network is set up differently...?
